It is well known that the interaction of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) with the solar wind leads to an equalisation of the ICME and solar wind velocities at 1 AU. This can be understood in terms of an aerodynamic drag force per unit mass of the form F D/M=−(ρe AC D/M)(V iV e)∣V iV e∣, where A and M are the ICME cross-section and sum of the mass and virtual mass, V i and V e the speed of the ICME and solar wind, ρe the solar wind density, C D a dimensionless drag coefficient, and the inverse deceleration length γ=ρe A/M. The optimal radial parameterisation of γ and C D beyond approximately 15 solar radii is calculated. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations show that for dense ICMEs, C D varies slowly between the Sun and 1 AU, and is of order unity. When the ICME and solar wind densities are similar, C D is larger (between 3 and 10), but remains approximately constant with radial distance. For tenuous ICMEs, the ICME and solar wind velocities equalise rapidly due to the very effective drag force. For ICMEs denser that the ambient solar wind, both approaches show that γ is approximately independent of radius, while for tenuous ICMEs, γ falls off linearly with distance. When the ICME density is similar to or less than that in the solar wind, inclusion of virtual mass effects is essential.  相似文献

Clear understanding of detailed lithospheric plate motions has been impeded by lack of a suitable means of graphical representation. A series of coloured global maps are presented that reveal more detail in the patterns of both absolute and relative global plate motions. The use of continuous colour to represent velocities overcomes the limitations of earlier maps that used isolated vectors at selected points to indicate plate velocities. Velocity magnitudes and directions for entire surfaces of plates were computed at a resolution of 0.5°, and are shown on two separate maps. Relative motions between plates were decomposed into their shear and normal components, and are plotted on separate maps. Continuous colour is again used to indicate both the directions and magnitudes of sinistral/dextral and convergent/divergent motions for all plate boundaries. A final map of normalized velocity magnitudes for all plates reveals a global, fast 'belt' of plate motion that parallels a great circle aligned with the fastest portion of the Pacific Plate and orthogonal to the East Pacific Rise.  相似文献

A new approach to constraining seawater δ34S and sulphate concentration using francolite‐bound sulphate reveals an abrupt increase in δ34S to +50‰ around the Early–Middle Cambrian boundary. Such high δ34S values are best explained by increased rates of pyrite burial due to ocean anoxia coupled with an increased sensitivity of the ocean sulphate reservoir to perturbations due to low sulphate concentrations of 500–700 μgL?1. We argue that the spread of anoxic waters at this time was partly the result of greenhouse warming related to the eruption of the Kalkarindji Large Igneous Province of northern Australia and that it triggered the collapse of early metazoan reef ecosystems during the latest Early Cambrian. Mass extinctions of the last 260 Myr have all coincided with enhanced volcanic activity, while several are also associated with positive shifts in seawater δ34S. An ahead-looking probe of some kind, optical or acoustic, is critical when one is attempting seafloor exploration from a mobile platform. A single-frequency, split aperture sonar system can be used for this purpose, but a wideband monopulse sonar offers many advantages. It computes a running estimate of the vertical directional cosine of the source of the echo, and can thus reveal the positions of multiple wave scatterers as long as their echoes can still be time resolved. Theoretical studies of its performance have been made previously, but were directly applicable only to extremely simple seafloor geometries. A new time-domain digital simulation that largely circumvents this limitation has been developed. The simulation also provides a means for testing the theory and optimizing system parameters. The reverberation model does not account for some features of acoustic backscattering such as diffraction, but it is believed to be adequate for the investigation of most signal processing aspects of the sonar system. The theory of the simulation is developed and several examples are presented and discussed. The coupling of thermal and ideal MHD effects in a sheared magnetic field is investigated. A slab geometry is considered so that the Alfvén mode can be decoupled from the system. With the total perturbed pressure approximately zero, the fast mode is eliminated and a system of linearized equations describing magnetic effects on the slow mode and thermal mode is derived. These modes evolve independently on individual fieldlines. One of the main features of this approach is that the influence of the dense photosphere can be included. A variety of different conditions that simulate the photospheric boundary are presented and the different results are discussed. A choice of field geometry and boundary conditions is made which removes mode rational surfaces so that there are no regions in which parallel thermal conduction can be neglected. This provides a stabilizing mechanism for the thermal mode. Growth rates are reduced by 30–40% and there is complete stabilization for sufficiently short fieldlines. The influence of dynamic and thermal boundary conditions on the formation of prominences is discussed.  相似文献

We examined hepatic EROD activity, as an indicator of CYP1A induction, in Barrow’s goldeneyes captured in areas oiled during the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and those from nearby unoiled areas. We found that average EROD activity differed between areas during 2005, although the magnitude of the difference was reduced relative to a previous study from 1996/1997, and we found that areas did not differ by 2009. Similarly, we found that the proportion of individuals captured from oiled areas with elevated EROD activity (?2 times unoiled average) declined from 41% in winter 1996/1997 to 10% in 2005 and 15% in 2009. This work adds to a body of literature describing the timelines over which vertebrates were exposed to residual Exxon Valdez oil and indicates that, for Barrow’s goldeneyes in Prince William Sound, exposure persisted for many years with evidence of substantially reduced exposure by 2 decades after the spill.  相似文献

Section D at Meishan, Changxing County in the Zhejiang Province, China, has been extensively studied in various aspects of the stratigraphy during the past 20 years. It was ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) as the Global Standard Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Permian–Triassic boundary in 2000, and is also a potential stratotype for the Wuchiapingian–Changhsingian boundary. However, the contact relationship between the Longtan (Wuchiapingian) and Changxing (Chainghsingian) formations has been a controversial subject for years. Recent studies on Section C, about 300 m west of Section D, at Meishan confirm a complete depositional succession around the boundary and suggest that the proposed boundary level, the FAD of Clarkina wangi within the lineage from C. longicuspidata to C. wangi, is consistent with the first appearance of the index Changhsingian fusulinid Palaeofusulina sinensis and tapashanitid ammonoids.  相似文献
